The Oil Spill from the Deepwater Horizon Incident is not an immediate threat to the East-Central Coast of Florida and the critical sea turtle habitat in our region, but conditions and forecast will be monitored. STPS will be coordinating with Brevard County and other organizatinons for voluneer efforts in that event. The most likely impacts may be from emulsfied oil/ tarbaslls in the coming weeks/months. STPS will send out notices via Flipperflash and Facebook regarding STPS coordinated efforts as needed.
Keep an eye on the Brevard County web page for notices regarding the event at
While there is no immediate action required, if you can visually monitor beaches and if you do see indications of oiled wildlife and/or oil on the beaches, call 211 to report your findings, repeate call 211.
You can also help with local beach clean-up activites (including the STPS program). Getting debris off the beaches is helpful to limit items that oil products can attach to. If and when oil products reach our beaches, special clean-up activites will be required (with training) as the oil products will be a hazarudous waste and will need to be addressed safely and properly.
